After I had written my first book in 1994, I came across a book on a similar topic written by two first-time authors I hadn’t heard of until then. While my first foray into publishing barely put a ding in the universe, theirs went on to become one of the best-selling business books of all time, Reengineering the Corporation. On a whim and a prayer, I decided to write to one of the authors, Jim Champy. I had the audacity to send him along a copy of my book with a note saying that I thought he’d be interested in what I had to say. Jim was kind enough to send back a very thoughtful note. That began a three-decade-long friendship that has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional trajectory. Jim has been a role model for the kind of mentorship and leadership that I have tried to emulate in my own interactions with others, kind, genuine, authentic, and caring.
